Women empowerment in Barak Valley

SILCHAR, July 23 - Preparations are afoot for the meeting of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in Barak Valley on July 24 and 25.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the Kanaklata Women Empowerment Scheme in Cachar and Karimganj districts as a part of the ongoing efforts of the Government to make women of the State self-reliant.

According to sources, the Chief Minister will address a meeting at Karimganj on July 24. The border town has come alive ahead of the meeting. Despite inclement weather, there is no dearth of efforts on the part of the organisers to accomplish the tasks and make the event successful.

On the other hand, Sports and Rural Development Minister Naba Kumar Doley has arrived in Silchar to take stock of the preparatory measures of the meeting to be held on July 25.

Talking to reporters today, Doley said �the BJP Government, both at the Centre and in the State, is giving thrust on the issue of women empowerment. As a part of the effort, Rs 315 crore has been allottted in the Budget for various activities to ensure that women of the State become self-reliant and empowered.

�We are expecting a turnout of over 50,000 women from all parts of Cachar district when the Chief Minister arrives here to inaugurate the scheme.�

Further, the Minister informed that on Gandhi Jayanti this year, the Government has decided to offer old-age pension to around 20 people of the State who are above 60 years of age as per available data.
