By Correspondent

MANGALDAI, March 10 - The body of a young woman was recovered on Monday afternoon from a public grazing ground near Ramhari Adhampara village, some 10 km from here. After several hours of the recovery, the young woman was identified by family members as Asfali Khatun (22), daughter of Mainal Ali, a resident of Baghpuri chapori.

The incident came to light on Monday afternoon when a local villager coming to the site at around 3 pm for grazing his cattle heard the cries of a baby. He then followed the source of the sound only to find a male baby (couple of months old) lying close to the body of a young woman. The police rescued the baby and immediately shifted it to Mangaldai Civil Hospital for necessary care and treatment.

Familly members said that Asfali was married to one Fainuddin Mandal (27), son of Jubbar Ali, of Bandiya chapori and the infant recovered along side the woman is their baby. The infant is stated to be under the observation of the doctors in Mangaldai Civil Hospital. The parents of the victim alleged before media persons that their daughter was tortured by their son-in-law leading to her death.

The police suspected it to be a case of murder by strangulation with the saree the woman was wearing. We suspect that the woman was killed by causing serious injury to her throat with a portion of the saree she was wearing. However, everything will be clear only after the post mortem report is received, said the Officer in Charge of Mangaldai Police Station Inspector Niranjan Baruah.
