ITANAGAR, Aug 31 In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old farm woman and mother of three children, was allegedly raped and murdered by a 23-year-old man in a remote village in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, according to police.

The naked body of the victim with injury marks on her face and body was found lying in her jhum field near her native Garu village, about 20 km off Gensi police station in West Siang district on Friday by her husband, who first informed the police, West Siang SP said.

The police, acting on a tip-off, arrested the accused, identified as Babuna Das, from his Lakhimpur residence on Saturday, divulged the SP, adding that the accused during questioning confessed to have committed the crime.

A police case in this connection has been registered with the Gensi PS under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and investigation is on.

Giving details about the entire episode, the SP informed that the husband of the victim went out in search of his wife when she was late in returning from the field. He spotted her body lying in their jhum field in a forested area, called Brahmaputra view point, along the Basar-Aalo road and informed the police.

The SP said that a goods-laden truck has remained parked along the said road for the past three-four days and the handyman of the truck, Babuna Das, was guarding the vehicle. With the driver out looking for a mechanic, Babuna committed the crime. Finding the woman alone in the area secluded from human settlements, he raped her and might have killed her to destroy evidence.

The SP, however, said the exact cause of her death can be established only after the post-mortem report arrives. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to her family.

Meanwhile, the Galo Peoples Federation has vehemently condemned the womans rape and murder. Holding the State Government responsible for the prevailing state of lawlessness with the rise in crimes against women, the Federation said that rape has no place in the Galo society. It urged the investigating agencies to book the culprit and award him exemplary punishment.
