GUWAHATI, Dec 7 - In an incident that lays bare the growing high-handedness of city bus operators, a woman identified as Rahima Begum (32) of Ghagrapara died a tragic death when she was allegedly pushed out of the bus by the conductor.
Eyewitness accounts said that the woman boarded the bus at Adabari along with her minor son, who started vomiting immediately after getting into the vehicle. At this, the conductor and the driver rudely asked her to clean the bus, which she refused. The conductor pushed her out of the door, following which she fell down badly on the road and fainted. Police arrived thereafter and rushed her to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The incident took place around 12.30 in the afternoon. Police seized the vehicle but the driver-handyman duo is absconding.
Bystanders and the local people have decried the role of the bus operators who often act as a law unto themselves, endangering the lives of the commuters including passengers. These public transport operators including city buses, trekkers, etc., keep flouting all road-related norms with impunity with the police and the transport authorities looking the other way, a passenger said.
