Woman killed in hit-and-run accident

AIZAWL, Oct 16 - A 62-year-old woman of Maubuang village, about 20 kms south of Aizawl, was killed after a speeding SUV knocked her down Saturday night.

A local of Maubuang village said the deceased Zorampari, her niece Rebek Lalbiaknii and the latter�s two kids, a four-year-old girl and a two-month-old boy, were sitting by the porch of their house, about three metres away from the road, when a speeding SUV ploughed into them around 7 pm last night.

Zorampari was declared brought dead at Falkawn Referral Hospital around 7.30 pm. Rebek escaped unhurt while her two kids are being treated at the hospital and their conditions were stated to be stable.

The Aizawl-bound SUV, coming from the neighbouring Thiak village, sped off after the incident. Seven people, including five girls, were travelling in the vehicle. They were returning from a birthday party at Thiak village.

Local leaders of Maubuang village called up their counterparts in the next village Sateek, who immediately made a roadblock and took the driver into safe custody, from an angry crowd that followed him from Maubuang village. The 26-year-old driver F Lalremruata, a resident of Khatla Bungkawn was later arrested by police.
