Woman held on trafficking charges

By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, Sept 19 - Majuli Police today arrested one Ranu Das for her alleged involvement in human trafficking. She had attempted to traffick a 14-year-old girl from the Garmur area of the river island in the first week of this month.

The police succeeded in rescuing the victim from Guwahati on September 5 while she was reportedly being taken to Rajasthan, a police source said.

Ranu and her father Haren Das, co-accused in the case, were on the run after the rescue of the minor girl. Haren Das is still absconding, the source added.

Meanwhile, the people of Majuli have been urged to remain vigilant and not fall into the trap of child traffickers who lure people through false promises of providing employment and better life.

Any information regarding such incidents should be immediately conveyed to the nearest police station or police outpost, the source said.
