Woman confesses to killing journalist

DOOMDOOMA, Aug 10 - A woman � identified as Ashwanti Bag (29) � and her sister Nitu Bag, have been arrested by Tinsukia police for the murder of Tinsukia-based TV and web journalist Bijan Deep.

Briefing the media at Tinsukia Sadar Police Station on Sunday evening, Additional Superintendent of Police Ripunjoy Kakoti said that based on circumstantial evidence and a clue received from the spot of the incident, police picked up Ashwanti Bag and her sister Nitu Bag from Phillobari Purna Bazar area on Saturday.

During police interrogation, Ashwanti Bag confessed that she murdered Bijan Deep on August 6 night at his office situated at Na-Pukhuri Jyoti Nagar of Tinsukia town.

The Additional Superintendent of Police informed the media that Ashwanti, who is a laboratory technician of NHM Mobile Unit, had good relations with Bijan. On August 6, she had gone to Bijan�s office for some work, where both of them had a quarrel over some matter.

Around midnight, Ashwanti killed Bijan by tying a cable around his neck. After committing the gruesome murder, she remained with the body in the office till morning. In the morning, she left the office and went to her home at Phillobari.

However, the ASP did not explain why Ashwanti killed Bijan. Police have registered a case against Ashwanti at Tinsukia Sadar PS under Section 302 of the IPC. Police have taken her on five days� remand. �Further investigation is in progress and within a few days, everything will be clear,� the ASP said.
