Woman beaten up for practising �witchcraft�

TEZPUR, Aug 17 - Sensation prevails in Missamari area of Sonitpur district after a woman was found lying unconscious near a field in Ramnathpur village. She was beaten up for allegedly performing witchcraft. Four persons have been booked in this connection, the police said.

According to the police, the woman, identified as Gita Munda, was found by the villagers in a critical condition in the village under Missamari police station on Sunday evening.

Later, she was admitted to the Tezpur Medical College. According to reports, she was tortured by four miscreants alleging that she used to perform witchcraft. The police said that they have launched a search operation to arrest all the four accused. The victim has reportedly identified three of them as �Shibu Mazi, Ajoy Orang and Dipak Sabar.

The police have already arrested Ajoy Orang in this connection.

Meanwhile, human rights activist, Dibya Jyoti Saikia, while talking to mediapersons, said that the accused who has already been arrested in this connection should be taken on police remand for at least five days to know the ground reality behind the incident. He also urged the government to implement an anti-witch hunting Bill soon, so that the witch hunting issues could be checked as early as possible.
