Wokha explosion death toll rises to nine

DIMAPUR, Feb 26 � With the recovery of another charred body and an injured succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday, the death toll in the Wokha town explosion and inferno has risen to nine.

The number of those injured has also risen after assessment and recording of patients by Wokha police. Of the 30 injured, four have been referred to Kohima and 18 discharged. Of the eight injured at Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital Wokha, one female was stated to be in coma.

Wokha police said it has been established that the explosion was not because of the handiwork of any anti-social elements but an accidental one leading to the tragic fire incident at a gun shop in Wokha town on February 24.

The Nagaland Cabinet held a meeting on Wednesday at the CM�s Secretariat to discuss and take stock of the incident.

Informing this in a statement, Media Officer to CM, Karaibo Chawang said the Cabinet took stock of the accidental explosion that resulted in the burning of few houses, causing loss of nine precious lives as well as damages to valuable properties. The Cabinet directed the Home department to take all necessary measures to render assistance and compensation to the affected persons.
