GUWAHATI, Nov 27 - The winter session of the Assam Assembly will begin from Thursday, in the midst of a fresh agitation in the State against the proposed move to amend the citizenship law.
The Opposition, including the AIUDF, is likely to raise the issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill vociferously, besides other issues like NRC, price hike, matters related to education, small finance and tea gardens.
The seven-day session will witness the oath taking of the four new MLAs, who won the recent bypolls.
The assembly secretariat has so far received six bills from the government which will be tabled during the session. Of them is a new bill � The Assam Contingency Fund (Augmentation of Corpus) Bill.
The other bills are amendments � The Assam Goods & Service Tax (Amendment) Bill, The Assam Taxation (on liquidation of arrear dues) (amendment) Bill, The Assam Women�s University (amendment) Bill and the Assam Excise (amendment) Bill. The excise department bill will seek to include molasses as an excisable item.
The assembly on December 5 will take up the �Speaker�s Initiative�. The topic of �Speaker�s Initiative� in this session is socio-economic development of ST and SC communities. The Speaker will also hold a meeting with different organizations and personalities on December 3 on the issue.
On the concluding day, there will be a discussion to commemorate the 150 years of birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. Political parties have called their legislature party meetings tonight to chalk out their strategies of the session.
