Wild tuskers kill two women in Biswanath

By Correspondent

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Aug 1 Large scale felling of trees in the Behali Reserve Forest in Biswanath Sub-division has led to increase in human-elephant conflicts resulting in loss of human lives and heavy damages to properties.

Wild elephants coming out of the forest last night again killed two women in that area.

According to sources, the tuskers that came out in search of food, killed Moina Bhuyan (30) and Malati Bhuyan (36) of Bijuli Jarani village under Behali police station around 3 am. The elephants also damaged the houses of Moin Mallik and Choita Bhuyan. Malati was Choitas wife.

It may be mentioned here that another man was killed at a nearby place just five days back.

The affected people alleged that the State Forest Department has failed to provide security to their lives and properties. On the other hand, sources in the Forest Department told The Assam Tribune that lack of manpower and shortage of sophisticated equipment and vehicles have hit the department badly and therefore they were unable to protect the people.
