KALAIGAON, July 3 - In a very tragic incident, two more people have been trampled by a wild loner elephant in Udalguri district last night.
According to information, one lady Balandina Orang (55) and her husband Elsu Orang (59), inhabitants of no. 4 Bongurum village, under Harisinga Police Station near India-Bhutan international border, were attacked by a loner wild elephant last night at 11 while they were sleeping in their cottage.
The lady died on the spot while her husband succumbed to grievous injuries this morning. So far 10 people have lost their lives due to attack by wild elephants and mostly by one or two loner elephants.
Wildlife activists have requested the government to take immediate steps so as to protect lives of both human and wild elephants. They also pointed out that the loner wild elephants responsible for the menaces must be identified and massive awareness campaign be launched among villagers so that causalities could be minimized. Udalguri has already been identified as the HEC (Human Elephant Conflict) hotspot in India.
