BISWANATH CHARIALI, Nov 12 - A herd of wild elephants has been reportedly creating havoc in the southern parts of Behali in Biswanath district for the last couple of days.
The elephant herd attacked villages like Borajuli, Bedeti areas of Behali. According to the villagers, the herd damaged properties, tea gardens and sali crops. The herd swallowed sali paddy in around hundred of bighas of land belonging to poor farmers. The villagers get tensed and horrified as soon as the dusk falls. Around 30 to 40 wild elephants come out of the jungles and start to create havoc in the areas.
Likewise, the people of Tokoubari, Lohitmukh and Raonamukh Gaon Panchayats in Gohpur subdivision have been spending sleepless nights for the last 12 days. The fate of these poor farmers hangs in the balance as the paddy fields are being destroyed by wild jumbos coming out of the Kaziranga National Park at the time of reaping the harvest.
It needs mention here that paddy fields are the only source of livelihood of the people of these areas and they are in a fix as to what to do during the coming season. The people of the affected areas have urged the government to adopt a system of wildlife management through well-trained Forest Guards and high-tech technology.
