SHILLONG, Oct 23 A sub-inspector of the West Garo Hills (WGH) police department, Promoth Sangma, lost his life early Thursday morning while fighting insurgents holed up at Songmagre near Purakhasia in West Garo Hills district.

The 50-year-old sub-inspector led his group to bust a militant hideout at Songmagre village under Purakhasia, along the India-Bangladesh border, on Wednesday. However, the team came under heavy gunfire, in the midst of which Sangma lost his life on Thursday. Songmagre is about 55 km from Tura.

Later, the body of the slain police official was brought to the Tura Reserve, where his colleagues paid their last respects before he was laid to rest.

His death in the line of duty will inspire us to continue our fight against insurgents in Meghalaya. We will never get demoralized, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of WGH, Bruno A Sangma while speaking at the ceremony.

During his 31-year long service, he won 36 monetary rewards, one commendation and the prestigious Governor Police Medal this year.

The Superintendent of Police of West Garo Hills district, Mukesh Singh, recently recommended Sangmas name for the Presidents Police Medal for his distinguished service.
