GUWAHATI, Dec 19 � Papul Changmai, gold medallist in the recently concluded Youth and Junior Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship at Paneng, Malaysia, was given a warm felicitation by the Assam Weightlifting Association (AWA) here today.
Papul, won the gold medal with a lift of 113 kg snatch and 139 kg jerk. Papul is the first son of the soil who has won an international gold medal for India and Assam.
Explaining his experience in the Penang meet, the boy from Batgharia village, near Dhemaji said it was amazing feeling when he came on top among seven competitors. Indian Weightlifting Federation president Birendra Prasad Baishya, who was present their at that moment, encouraged him a lot. Papul said he would like to win medals in Asian Championship and Olympics within 2014.
He said, in the 2007 inter district meet at Tezpur, he was a novice in the sport. But gradually he got interested in it and with minute observation of the techniques he adopted almost everything within three years. In 2008 he was able to snatch 80 to 90 kg but now he can snatch 113 kg. Now he is an inmate of Army Sports Institution, Pune and according to AWA secretary if everything go accordingly, Papul will soon be able to win more international medals for the country in the senior grade. Papul thanked his coaches Anup Konwar who encourages him with valuable technical tips all the time. He also mentioned that during his training at Sivasagar, he learnt a lot from his coaches there.
One of his mentors Padma Borgohain said Papul was spotted during a selection trial at Dhemaji in 2007. Considering his interest towards the game, his dedication and talent he was picked for the Tezpur inter-district meet. From this point, his journey began and at present he has established himself as a medal winning lifter.
A degree course student of Moridhal College, Dhemaji, Papul has a bright future but he must be dedicated and stick to hard work coupled with a disciplined life. AWA officials Anup Dutta, Basanta Das, Ramen Das were also present on the occasion.
