Week-long workshop on statistical software held

GUWAHATI, Aug 27 - A national-level �One-week online Workshop on Data Analysis using SPSS & R� was organised by the Department of Statistics, Gauhati University from August 18 to 24.

SPSS is a very popular software for data analysis due to its user-friendly nature, while R is a feature-rich open source software having a vast software ecosystem and communities.

Prof Laishram Ladu Singh, Vice Chancellor, Bodoland University was the chief guest at the inaugural session. In his keynote address, he traced back the origins of statistical software and spoke at length regarding their various applications and appreciated and encouraged the coordinators for organising such workshops regularly. The session was presided over by Prof Kishore Kumar Das, Head of the Department of Statistics, Gauhati University.

The welcome address was delivered by Paramita Roy, joint coordinator of the workshop, while Dr Pallabi Medhi, joint coordinator, delivered the vote of thanks, a press release said.

Around 190 participants shortlisted from among applicants from prestigious institutions such as JNU, IIT Bombay, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Delhi, Kalyani University, Vidya Sagar University, Delhi University, Visva Bharati, Jamia Milia Islamia, Magadh University � Bihar, University of Hyderabad, the Central University of Karnataka, Tezpur Central University, North Eastern Hill University, Nagaland University, Tripura University, Rajiv Gandhi University � Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim University, Assam University, Bodoland University, Dibrugarh University, St Xavier�s College � Mumbai, CSIR-IIIM, among others, took part in the event.

The participants were drawn from various academic disciplines, viz. Economics, Statistics, Geography, Mathematics, Education, Folklore, Commerce, Zoology, Botany, Life Science and Bio-informatics, Political Science, Forestry, Anthropology, Business Administration, Environmental Sciences, Petroleum Technology, Applied Sciences, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Data Science, Plant Taxonomy and Biodiversity, Law, etc.
