GUWAHATI, Aug 30 - The Midway Journey, a citizens initiative led by youth, organised a webinar on waste handling, including reduction and segregation of waste, on Saturday.

The main objective of the webinar was to spread awareness about the global waste crisis and how citizens can contribute to improving the situation.

The Guwahati city ranked 303rd last year in Swachh Survekshan but this year it dropped further down the list to 356th position among 382 cities of the country. This sheds light on the plight of solid waste management system of the city and role of the citizens in handling the waste, a member of Midway Journey said.

We are also focusing on our ongoing social experiment titled power of 300 whereby we are promoting recycling of milk and oil packets and polythene bags which are usually not collected by the waste collectors, he said.

According to him, more than 150 families in various wards of Guwahati are segregating and keeping the recyclable packets, which are collected by their team and sends them for recycling.

The money generated by recycling the discarded packets will be used for providing ration to the families of waste collectors who are facing a difficult time during the present crisis, he added.
