GUWAHATI, Sept 9 - Along with rest of India, Assam has also been celebrating the �Big Butterfly Month� for the first time. One of the important parts of the month is the nationwide butterfly survey which is taking place from September 14 to 21, 2020. Keeping in mind the big butterfly count, Jorhat district coordinators Dr Manashi Bortamuly (coordinator of BBMI, Jorhat district, HoD of Zoology Dept, NNS College) and Nilav Bhuyan (co-coordinator of BBMI, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, JB College, Jorhat) organized a training session on �Google Meet� with students and other nature lovers. This was stated in a press release.
Followed by inauguration, Dr M Bortamuly stressed on the importance of butterfly study and their role as a indicator of climate change. Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi (Scientist-BNHS) introduced the common 100 butterfly species to the participants along with their host plant and identification techniques. In this context, Monsoon jyoti Gogoi explained the extinction of many pre-existing butterfly species found especially in Jorhat district of Assam during the colonial period. In answer to a question asked by a participant, he explained how butterfly tourism industry can flourish in Assam.
Questions of the participants were taken up by Abhijeet Konwar (research scholar at NIAS, Bengaluru), who is another butterfly enthusiast. Along with students, teachers from various colleges of Jorhat, delegates from Jorhat Science Centre& Planetarium benefitted from the webinar on common butterflies, the press release added.
