Webinar on 70-year journey of Constitution

GUWAHATI, Nov 10 - Since 1950 the Constitution of India has been the guiding and living document in strengthening and empowering its democracy in the last 70 years, experts observed at a webinar organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Guwahati on the topic �70 years of journey of Indian Constitution since 1950 and its ever growing relevance� on Monday.

Experts from the law fraternity along with academicians deliberated on the journey of the Constitution from legal, socio-economic growth and development and judicial and policy perspectives.

Prof A Lakshminath, distinguished Professor Emeritus, Maharashtra National Law University and former VC, Chanakya National Law University, said that the Constitution of India has been the document that has exemplified the journey of socio-economic development of the country. He said the makers of the Constitution had also provided the vast vision of growth and development and vividly provided the guidelines and the principles on which the progress had been attained.

Prof Srikrishna Deva Rao, Vice Chancellor, National Law University, Delhi said that since adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949, the journey has been to felicitate progress. He said it has been a journey of strengthening and empowering democracy in the last 70 years.

Amit Khemka, advocate, Supreme Court and Delhi High Court, said that equality and accessibility of law to citizens is a vital aspect of the Constitution of India.

Monalisa Chowdhury, advocate of Delhi High Court said that the growth and progress of democracy has been multi-dimensional. She spoke about the quintessential role and the importance of the judiciary in delivering justice to the citizens of the country. She said that the Directive Principles of State Policy of India are the guidelines and the principles which have provided strength to the citizens to perform their responsibilities.

Abdur Rahman Mallick, advocate, Delhi High Court, said that functioning of the Parliament and efficient and efficacious role of three wings including the Parliament, Judiciary and Executive form a telling story of the success of democracy. He said that the Parts, Schedules, Articles, Chapters, and Amendments in the Constitution made it an evolving document of the democratic essence of the country.
