Webinar held on promotion of para sports in Assam

GUWAHATI, Oct 13 - The Sports Authority of Assam today conducted a webinar on promotion of para sports in the State.

Welcoming the guests, Onkar Kedia, DG, Sports Authority of Assam said that sports can transform the lives of our Divyangjans. He cited the example of Manasi Joshi, para badminton player who has featured on the cover page of the Time magazine.

Inaugurating the webinar, Mukesh C Sahu, Commissioner and Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Government of Assam said that sports can play an important role in the all-round development of persons with disabilities. He said that his department will support any initiative to ensure large-scale participation of such persons in sports.

Other panellists were Paralympic Association of Assam president Samiron Bordoloi; senior sports journalist Premadhar Sharma; senior journalist Pranay Bordoloi and international para athletes Chiranjita Bharali and Biswajit Ray.

The panellists opined that sports should be organised at the State and district levels for para athletes and focus should be on ensuring maximum participation. Adequate sports infrastructure should be made available for para athletes in the State.

The discussion was moderated by athletics coach Nipon Das, stated a release.
