Weapon used in historic Allaboi battle recovered

NORTH GUWAHATI, April 17 � A sharp weapon reportedly used in the historic Allaboi war in which around 10,000 Assamese soldiers sacrificed their lives at the hands of the advancing Mughal soldiers was recently recovered from the Checha river near Pacharia-Dhingarbori.

The weapon embedded in the river-bed at 40 feet depth was recovered by workers who were engaged in construction of a bridge over the Checha river.

The excavation works for construction of the bridge is still on and more such weapons of archaeological importance might be found. The weapon recovered has been kept under the custody of the president of Dhingarbari-Pacharia Gaon Panchayat, Mathura Bharali.

The weapon measuring 1� feet long weighs about 700 grams. But surprisingly, it is free from rust despite its recovery from the river bed.

Paresh Baishya and Madhusudan Medhi, president and general secretary of Saraighat Journalists� Association respectively have requested the Department of Archaeology to examine and preserve the weapon as witness of the historic Allaboi War tragedy.
