GUWAHATI, Nov 5 - Water supply to hundreds of households of Shantipur and Durgasarobar areas of the city has been affected due to a major breakdown of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation�s (GMC) machine at Shantipur about a week back.
A resident of Shantipur said, �The water supply got affected soon after the breakdown of the water supply machine. We do not have alternative arrangements like tubewells and are dependent on piped water supply. And now, with the breakdown of the machine, we will not even get water to take a decent bath.�
The resident further said, �The GMC has been supplying water in the affected areas by means of mobile tankers on alternate days, but that is not sufficient. We urge the GMC to fix the machine soon and resume water supply.�
A source in the GMC said, �A machine of the GMC at Shantipur has developed a technical snag. Our workers have been engaged to fix it soon. Repairing work has been going on full swing.�
The source added, �Water has been supplied in the affected areas through mobile water tankers. However, it will not be possible for us to cover all the areas with the tankers, but we will try to cover the maximum number of residents.�
