GUWAHATI, Aug 17 � Low pressure in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) water mains has resulted in great suffering for the people of many East Guwahati localities. Residents of these localities, which include parts of Chandmari, Rajgarh Road, Pub-Sarania and Goswami Service areas, allege that their taps are virtually dry for the past about one month and their complaints have also fallen on the deaf ears.
They also complain that for quite a long time their taps are supplying them turbid water during the rainy days. Moreover, contrary to the legal provisions, some unscrupulous people have been openly drawing water from the mainline to their overhead tanks using pumps in these localities, with the civic authorities turning blind eyes to the phenomenon, they allege.
It needs mention here that the people of these localities are connected with the Satpukhuri Water Supply Scheme of the GMC.
When contacted, sources in the GMC said that the recent landslide near the Satpukhuri Scheme affected the water supply mainline and it was discovered that some of the rubbles remained inside the main pipe blocking the flow of water.
Efforts are on to clear this blockage with the help of water pressure. This has resulted in clearing the blockage up to Silpukhuri now and it is expected that the normal water pressure in the mainland could be restored in the rest of the areas within the next about 15 days, said the GMC sources.
On the issue of turbid water coming out of the municipal taps, sources said that this phenomenon is the result of the cable laying exercises of the Post and Telegraph Department.
