GUWAHATI, April 21 - The Water Resources Department (WRD) has started cleaning up the Bharalumukh pumping station and Bharalu sluice gate.

A source in the WRD said that maintenance of the pumps and garbage cleaning have been carried out from April 13 after an instruction was issued by the Kamrup (Metro) district administration.

Our personnel have been engaged in garbage cleaning around the pumping station and the sluice gate. Moreover, all the power-driven permanent pumping machines at Bharalumukh, Mora Bharalu, Bondajan, Lakhimijan, Anil Nagar, Lachit Nagar, Tarun Nagar and Jonali have been made ready to operate, the source added.

Work will continue till October this year. Moreover, desiltation of the rivers is also important to accommodate the excessive water coming down from the hills in the city. But the desilting works have not started yet, the source said.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation has also started cleaning the drains in several parts of the city.

A local resident of Ganeshguri however said, The workers of the corporation clean the drains, but they do not dispose the mud and silt, they just dumped it on the roadside. It should be disposed immediately after the drains are cleaned.
