Water pump deal needs probe: SGBG

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Aug 12 - Highlighting the problem of acute water crisis in several areas of Guwahati, NGO Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG) has written to Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi asking him to order a probe into the water pump purchase deal for the Satpukhuri plant.

SGBG president Krishno K Borooah has mentioned that areas like Chandmari Colony, Karnachal, Government Press area, Shastri Path and a number of surrounding localities are facing acute water crisis for more than a month now. With the sweltering summer heat and the present restrictions due to COVID-19, the crisis has multiplied the woes of common citizens, he stated.

The GDD minister had assured the people in June that once the damaged pumps of the Satpukhuri plant are replaced, the problem would be solved for good. However, its been reported that the new pumps, which are supposed to run for eight hours continuously, fail to take the load for more than three hours at a stretch, stated the SGBG memorandum addressed to the Governor.

Questioning the water pump deal and the quality of the new pumps, the NGO said that instead of repairing, the government must ask the company to replace the defective pumps with new ones.

Such state-of-the-art machinery should not have developed a technical snag within a couple of days of installation. The government must insist on replacement or taking legal action against the supplier, it added.
