GUWAHATI, May 25 Intermittent rainfall since last night yet again caused water- logging in several parts of the city creating problems for Guwahatians, specially in the morning hours. Many areas including Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Tarun Nagar, Zoo Road, Hatigaon and Rajgarh witnessed artificial floods, which however, could be contained by the afternoon as a result of the immediate action taken by the administration.
Facing public ire for not doing enough to control flash flood since the past several years, the district administration sprung into action since early morning toady to pump out water from the affected areas.
However, in some parts of the low-lying areas including Nabin Nagar and Tarun Nagar, water entered the houses of the residents and could not be taken out by the evening. School and office-goers in particular faced immense problems due to continuous rain and water-logging in the busy morning hours.
Some other patches in Panbazar, Hatigaon, Panjabari, Lokhra and Jyotikuchi also faced flash floods.
The administration, on the other hand, claimed achievement on its part as some areas including RG Baruah Road, Chandmari and Rajgarh areas could be saved from knee-deep water-logging, which was a common sight after heavy rainfall.
GNB Road, Chandmari and RG Baruah Road used to be the most-affected roads after rainfall, affecting the traffic flow for several hours. However, this time both the roads were pliable even during the downpour. However, in some low-lying patches, where water accumulates easily, it is difficult to pump out water immediately, said sources from the district administration.
Residents, however, are yet to agree with the arguments of the district administration. In Lachit Nagar area, where the locals faced a harrowing time due to the water-logging in lanes and bye-lanes together with the bad condition of the roads, the people felt that the situation had not improved much since the last year.
The government has adopted some quick fix measures to control floods. As a result, if one locality gets some relief, situation worsens in another locality due to water diversion without proper scientific planning, DN Tamuly, a senior resident of the area said.
