GUWAHATI, Aug 3 � The young and trendy generation has of late taken a fancy towards bags made out of water hyacinth.
Yes, the mundane water hyacinth has bocome a fashion statement among the youth as well as a section of the middle-aged citizens.
Biswajit Deb, a craftsperson who has been imparting training on making products out of water hyacinth to entrepreneurs under the aegis of the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFi), said that the popularity of water hyacinth bags was amazingly soaring.
"The water hyacinth has many practical applications and different items like baskets, bags, furniture and decorative pieces can be made out of it," said Deb, acknowledging that he too was pleasantly surprised by the increasing demand of water hyacinth bags.
Deb mentioned that apart from the quality and longevity of the water hyacinth bags, the touch of the ethnic and innovativeness were other factors behind the huge demand.
It needs to be mentioned here that college-going girls nowadays can be spotted carrying water hyacinth bags and walking with a sense of satisfaction because they can easily catch the eye of the passers-by with their bags with a difference.
�I am very happy with my water hyacinth bag. It has lasted more than a couple of years now,� said Rita Baruah, a housewife.
When products of water hyacinth were launched four years back, it had very few takers. Consumers had their doubts regarding the durability of the products and of course water hyacinth was not considered an elegant option.
But things have of late changed for the better and artisans involved in this trade are all smiles as water hyacinth has changed the rural economic scenario.
�In the days to come, water hyacinth products will be seen in every household. The products of water hyacinth have an aesthetic appeal and that is why bags have found favour with the trendy girls,� said Deb, adding that sales figures of water hyacinth bags alone at the ongoing exhibition at NEDFi Haat here stood at Rs 8000.
