GUWAHATI, July 25 - The overall flood situation in the State is yet to undergo a drastic improvement. With heavy rainfall activities resuming over several of its districts and some of its neighbouring states, the flood situation remained critical in some parts of the State. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), release of excess water from the Kurichhu Hydropower Plant reservoir in Bhutan has also aggravated the flood situation in some districts of Lower Assam like Barpeta, Nalbari, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar and Dhubri.
The flood-related death toll has gone up to 76 with a fresh report of a case of death due to flood received from Dhubri district during the past 24 hours. The number of flood-affected people in the State today stood at over 34 lakh in 2,753 villages under 67 revenue circles of the 18 districts of Dhemaji, Darrang, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat and Cachar, said the ASDMA here this evening.
It also said that at present, 833 relief camps are operational in the districts of Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat and Jorhat. Together, they have 1, 95,159 inmates. Moreover, 102 relief distribution centres are also operating in the districts of Lakhimpur, Darrang, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Kamrup, Morigaon and Sivasagar, said the ASDMA.
The Brahmaputra (at Neamatighat and Dhubri), the Jia Bharali (at NT Road Crossing), the Puthimari (at NH Road Crossing), the Manas (at NH Road Crossing) and the Beki (at Road Bridge) are flowing above their respective danger level, the ASDMA said.
