NAGAON, Oct 29 - Acting on a tip-off, Nagaon Police led by Jhon Das, DSP arrested a wanted rhino poacher along with sophisticated arms and ammunition from Kawoimari village under Rupahihat police station this morning. Police subsequently recovered a 303 rifle, eight rounds of live bullets and a silencer from his possession.

According to sources, the arrested poacher has been identified as Abu Hashim (35) of Kawoimari village under Rupahihat police station. SP of Nagaon, Shankarbrata Raimedhi addressed a press conference in this regard here at Nagaon PS.

Raimedhi said that Abu was picked up by the police when he was carrying those arms and ammunition in a bag and was on a bicycle with a view to hand over the bag to someone else. He however claimed that Abu along with a larger gang were planning to poach a rhino in Kaziranga National Park in November. But the police poured water on his plan and apprehended him before hand. The police has received information about two other persons who were also involved in the plan with Abu Hashim and they were intensifying a massive manhunt to crack those members of the gang till the filing of this report.

On the other hand, some miscreants last night allegedly vandalised one SBI ATM booth situated in front of the Nagaon Sadar police station. The incident drew sharp reactions from the people of the town and also raised various questions about police security in Nagaon. However, though the miscreants vandalised the ATM, yet their attempt to loot cash from it failed, the sources added.
