Wangala festival celebrated in Garo Hills

TURA, Feb 1 � The border village of Kharkutta in North Garo Hills celebrated the first-ever 50 drum Wangala festival on Friday amidst a return to tradition. The event saw five Wangala teams perform a total of 103 forms of dances.

Titled Megaru, after the plant that is an ingredient in the making of rice beer by Garos, a crowd of more than 10,000 witnessed the event.

The festival was organised by the Kharkutta Cultural Committee. and saw MLA from Mendipathar and parliamentary secretary in the Mukul Sangma led government, Marthon J Sangma was the chief guest for the occasion. Chrerak W Momin, another and local MLA was also a part of the festivities.

�Garos are a culturally advanced group of people and it is traditions like Wangala that we need to preserve for posterity�, said Parliamentary Secretary Cherak W Momin.
