Walking zone inaugurated in Jorhat

JORHAT, Sept 3 - State Assembly Speaker-cum-local MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami today inaugurated an exclusive walking zone for morning walkers and joggers here.

The Borpatra Ali (Baruah Sariali to Gandhi Children�s Park) has been declared an exclusive walking zone by the district administration for two hours, i.e., from 5 am to 7 am every day.

Plying all kinds of vehicles will be barred for two hours in the morning for the benefit of people to walk and jog freely in a calm and clean environment.

The inaugural function was organised today to coincide with the birthday of noted sportsman and Arjuna Award winner Bhogeswar Baruah.

The function, attended by a large number of people from all walks of life and age groups, was attended by Jorhat MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Deputy Commissioner Narayan Konwar, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jayanta Goswami and several district administration officials.

The initiative comes in the wake of requests from many organisations and individuals to the Speaker and the district administration for notifying a walking zone for the morning hours when the atmosphere remains relatively less polluted compared to the rest of the day.

The district administration has formed a committee for proper implementation of the initiative. The committee has noted opthalmologist Dr Narayan Bordoloi and advocate and RTI activist Rintu Goswami as president and secretary respectively.

A series of competitions in the cultural field, a photography contest and a free health check-up camp were organised as a part of the inauguration programme.
