Vote polarisation, Modi wave help Gohain

MORIGAON, May 18 � Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP) candidate Rajen Gohain won the Nagaon Parliamentary seat for the fourth time in the recently concluded election defeating INC candidate Jon Jonali Boruah by a margin of 1,43,529 votes. Despite there being 6 Congress MLAs out of 9 Assembly segments under Nagaon LS seat, Rajen Gohain won the race due to polarisation of votes and Modi wave this time.

It may be mentioned here that there is not a single BJP MLA in the nine Assembly seats under Nagaon Parliamentary seat. But, in the final outcome, it was seen that except Lahorighat, in all the Assembly seats, the Congress candidate Jon Jonali Boruah lost by big margins. Even in her own constituency at Morigaon, Jon Jonali Boruah got the second position. In Morigaon, Rajen Gohain got 55,104 votes while Boruah secured 45,739 votes followed by AIUDF candidate Langthasa who got 14,098 votes. Likewise, at Jagiroad, Rajen Gohain secured 69,446 votes while Jon Jonali Boruah got 40,057 and Aditya Langthasa got 29,407 votes. In Lahorighat, the Congress candidate got the first position with 53,107 votes followed by Aditya Langthasa with 40,398 while Rajen Gohain got the third position securing 23,095 votes.

In Raha LAC, where Piyush Hazarika is the MLA, the BJP candidate secured 58,165 votes while the AIUDF candidate got the second position with 39,426 votes and Jon Jonali Boruah got third position with 35,230 votes. In Nagaon LAC, Rajen Gohain secured 57,207 votes followed by the Congress candidate with 36,514 votes while the AIUDF candidate got 24,258 votes. In Barhampur LAC, from where Prafulla Mahanta is the MLA, Rajen Gohain secured 60,831 votes followed by Jon Jonali Boruah with 32,307 votes and Aditya Langthasa who got 14,586 votes. Here the AGP candidate Mridula Borkakoti got the fourth position getting 6,989 votes. In Jamunamukh, the AIUDF candidate Dr Langthasa secured the highest 78,318 votes followed by the Congress with 31,804 votes and Rajen Gohain got the third position with 17,652 votes.

In Hojai LAC, from where Dr Ardhendu Dey is the MLA, Rajen Gohain secured the highest 85,154 votes followed by the AIUDF with 45,472 votes and the Congress in third position having 38,285 votes. In Lumding LAC, the BJP candidate secured highest 67,351 votes followed by the Congress with 37,370 votes and the AIUDF having 28,013 votes.

The religious minority votes got divided between the Congress and the AIUDF in Lahorighat, Jamunamukh, Hojai and Raha. Moreover, Bengali Hindu voters in Jagiroad, Hojai, Lumding cast their votes in favour of the BJP and as such there was smooth sailing for Rajen Gohain at Nagaon this time.
