Violent incidents rock Dima Hasao

By Correspondent

HAFLONG, Jan 28 - A series of violent incidents, like kidnapping, grenade lobbing and firing, at a time when the people from the Dimasa community are celebrating Busu on the night of Wednesday and also on the eve of the special session of the NC Hills Autonomous Council, has raised many an eyebrow among the citizens of Dima Hasao.

Unidentified miscreants at 10 pm on Wednesday abducted Lala Nampui (75) and Josepha Nampui (25) from New Sangbar village under Umrangsu Police Station and then proceeded to Thingdol village, from there they abducted Luapui Thiaite. Then they went to Dimainu village and fired several rounds in the air.

In another incident, miscreants abducted Bijon Kemprai, brother of Dima Hasao DCC(I) president Mahendra Kemprai, from Thaijuari.

At Haflong, miscreants fired at the residence of district BJP general secretary Deben Thaosen at about 11.45 pm. No one was incidentally injured. At about 2.30 am on Thursday, a grenade was lobbed at the office of News Dima Hasao, injuring three police personnel Tilak Das, Dhamendra Das and Rajesh Sing seriously.

As a protest, thousands of people from Fiangpui and Lodi villages of Haflong today took out a silent procession and submitted a memorandum to the Dima Hasao Deputy Commissioner Amarendra Barua and urged him to rescue the abducted persons at the earliest.

The Biate Apex Body president told media-persons that if the abducted people are not released soon, they would not remain peaceful.

Meanwhile, members of the Dima Hasao DCC(I) met the Deputy Commissioner and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, apprising him of the abduction of four Congress members by unidentified miscreants from their villages on January 27. The memorandum also alleged that the Congress Members suspect this to be the handiwork of the ruling Members of the Council. The memorandum also demanded necessary steps to rescue the abducted Congress Members and book the culprits at the earliest.

Assuring the Congress Members that the district administration has already taken up all possible steps to thwart such antisocial activities, the Deputy Commissioner said that an operation has been launched to rescue these kidnapped persons.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party Dima Hasao unit strongly condemned the firing at the residence of Deben Thaosen by unidentified miscreant and the grenade attack at the News Dima Hasao office at Ramnagar, and urged the district administration and the police authority to apprehend the culprits as soon as possible. The party also strongly condemned the kidnapping of four persons and demanded the release of the innocent persons unconditionally and without any physically harm.

Superintendent of Police Dr Dhananjay Parshuram Ghanawat, talking to media-persons, said these unfortunate incidents are politically motivated. We are keeping a close watch and nobody would be spared. We will leave no stone unturned to check such antisocial activities.
