Violence, rigging cast shadow over polls

RANGIYA, April 11 � Four personnel of 172 BSF Battalion including an SI K Yadav, deployed at the polling booth of 77 No. Balak Vidyalaya at Udiana of 57 Rangiya LAC were arrested in presence of Kamrup SP AJ Baruah and senior BSF officials here today, after they suddenly assaulted the general voters of the locality who were standing in queue to cast their votes.

The BSF personnel�s sudden lathicharge injured nearly 20 people including five women. They also fired into the air to control the public. Seriously injured Babul Ali was later shifted to GMCH.

According to reports, angry public also pelted stones to retaliate the BSF�s sudden move in which few BSF personnel were also injured. the mob turned so violent that they even burnt down completely a Gypsy vehicle and overturned two other vehicles.

Meanwhile, voting was stopped in the said booth and repoll has been announced. The date has yet to be declared by the Election Commission.

In another incident later in the afternoon today, BPF worker was severely assaulted by some persons on his way home.

Our Barama Correspondent adds: One Girish Sarma of Barsimuliguri who is an active AGP worker was assaulted by some miscreants at Merkuchi polling station today.

Rekha Rani Das Baro the AGP candidate from Barama constituency protest against the assault on her party worker and also lodge an FIR at Barama Police Station alleging that she too was threatened with dise consequences. Police rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Our Bongaigaon Correspondent adds: Polling passed off peacefully in Bongaigaon district except a few incident. In Abhayapuri North LAC a clash between Congress and AIUDF supporters took place.

In Bongaigaon LAC a clash between BPF and AGP workers took place in which two injured. The incident occured at Mahavirsthan Hindi HS School this afternoon when a group of BPF workers allegedly attempt to rig the polls. An AGP worker who tried to prevent them, was assaulted.

Our Hatsingimari Correspondent adds: The AIUDF has alleged that the supporters of Wajed Ali Chowdhuri, the INC candidates indulged in rigging in eighteen polling stations of 22 South Salmara LAC during the poll hours today. The polling stations where rigging alleged are 14, 16, 36, 37, 52, 53, 54, 55, 82, 83, 95, 96, 107, 108, 109, 110, 142 and 143.

PTI adds from Guwahati: In Mazbat constituency in Udalaguri district a policeman allegedly touched a woman voter while trying to maintain the queue triggering protests. According to SP Debajit Deuri, the policeman accidentally touched the woman voter.

Deuri said there was �aggression� on the part of the police but on apologising to the people the situation was brought under control and voting continued uninterrupted.

Assam Minorities Students Union alleged police had physically manhandled as the voters protested.

In the same district�s Bamunpargaon of Sipajhar and Samoguri, several persons received minor injuries in a clash between supporters of rival parties.

In Dhubri district�s 149 Jawahar Hindi High School booth, a CRPF man, coming here on leave to vote, was beaten up by his colleagues here who accused him of taking photos inside the polling station when his mobile phone rang.

The CRPF men confiscated his mobile set and also assaulted him before police intervened, sources said, adding, voting continued uninterrupted.

In 191 Korotipam polling station of Jagiroad constituency in Morigaon district polling was stopped for one hour when supporters of two rival parties clashed, the sources added.
