SHILLONG, June 12 - The mobile Internet service will remain suspended in the Meghalaya capital for another 24 hours in the aftermath of the recent flare-up here. The curfew schedule will also remain unchanged.
Although the Internet service was scheduled to be restored today, but an incident of violence at Jowai in Jaintia Hills compelled the district authorities to do a rethink.
On Monday, a scuffle broke out between a shopkeeper and a customer after the former objected to the latter smoking inside his shop. After the alleged assault on the customer by the shopkeeper, several people surrounded the shop and other places in the area. Sensing trouble, the district authorities clamped Section 144 of the CrPC.
�The situation is under control and the guilty has been arrested. Section 144 of the CrPC is in force,� Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills, Vivek Syiem said over the phone.
A senior official here said that the district administration of East Khasi Hills is not taking any chances due to the Jowai incident. Therefore, the curfew timing as well as the suspension of mobile Internet service will remain unchanged.
�We will assess the situation again after 24 hours. The paramilitary forces will also remain here till June 18,� the official added.
