Violators of lockdown to be punished: DGP

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 20 - Director General of Assam Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said that the lockdown violators would be dealt with strictly and those found not wearing masks or breaching social distancing norms would invite penal provisions under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Addressing the media today, Mahanta said the Assam Police apart from playing the facilitative role would ensure total enforcement of lockdown guidelines. Those found not wearing masks or spitting in public places would be booked under Sections 188, 269 and 270 of the IPC, he said.

Section 269/270 of the IPC, which relates to negligent act likely to spread infection of a disease dangerous to life, may invite imprisonment along with fine or both.

Assam Police will also register cases against those who are found violating the social distancing norms, he said.

While appealing to the public not to venture out until and unless it is a case of emergency, Mahanta said that police have seized 25,000 vehicles during the lockdown period.

On those who have been categorised as emergency services or even those who have been exempted from the restrictions, he said carrying a identity card is a must. Those who do not possess any identity cards must carry a written statement by their employer with complete details, the DGP said.
