DIMAPUR, Oct 4 In a daring act, a group of youths today caught two cadres of the NSCN (K) faction who were trying to extort money from the stone quarries/crushers as well as truckers and JCB owners near St Paul School in Phesama under Southern Angami region.
Those two persons have been identified as SS 2nd Lieutenant Mughato Yepthomi, and SS Sgt Maj Zukiho Awomi of NSCN (K).
Sources from the Phesama Village Council (PVC) informed that there were reports that four NSCN (K) cadres were moving around in the village on Monday making verbal financial demands. The villagers thereafter mobilised the youths in a bid to nab the extortionists.
Soon after, at around 1 pm on Wednesday, the youths came across a taxi which had two occupants. The two brandished a 9mm pistol when the youths stopped the car to interrogate them. However, one of the youths managed to catch hold of one of the cadres hands before he could cock the weapon and the others joined in to overpower the duo.
Police from Khuzama took custody of the two persons, the sources said and added that a 9mm pistol with seven live cartridges were recovered from them.
Condemning the incident, Phesama Village Council officials alleged that the two accused persons were repeatedly extorting money from people of the area. They further alleged that the two were also involved in the recent torching of a loaded truck on National Highway 29 for not acceding to their demands.
