BONGAIGAON, May 29 - A 16-member team of the State vigilance and Anti-corruption department raided the official residence of the Chirang SDO (Sadar) Jayanta Sarkar and arrested him along with his driver Sushanta Roy Chowdhury on Thursday evening. Today, they were taken to Guwahati to be produced before the special court.
Sarkar had received bribe from Dhananjay Barman, husband of a ration dealer of Public Distribution System (PDS), in his chamber at Chirang Deputy Commissioner office at Kajalgaon on Thursday.
Sarkar had allegedly demanded one lakh rupees as bribe from Barman to hush up allegation raised against his wife Sabita Barman, who is a ration dealer at Tunkubari area in the district, by some local people.
Barman said though allegations against his wife were fabricated but he could not convince Sarkar about his wifes innocence. Instead Sarkar demanded bribe from him.
Later, Barman promised Sarkar to pay Rs 20,000 only. But before paying the amount he contacted the State Vigilance and Anti-corruption department. Accordingly, Barman paid the amount in the knowledge of the Anti-corruption team, which had reached the office just after the transaction and trailed Sarkar when he rushed to his official residence at the Bongaigaon Refinery (BGR) township from his office sensing the team following him. The team is interrogating Sarkar at his official residence and arrested him and his driver at last. The driver had a direct role in handling the bribe, sources said.
