Victims kin demand death penalty

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 5 The victims of October 30 blasts on Wednesday demanded death sentence for Ranjan Daimary, the prime suspect of the mayhem that had converted the capital city into a city of smoke, blood and mangled bodies. The victims also made it clear that if the ULFA c-in-c Paresh Baruah had been arrested as the prime suspect of the serial blasts, they would have asked for the same punishment for him.

Addressing mediapersons here, the family members of those killed in the Ganeshguri blast said that the process of justice should not be unduly delayed as they have been waiting long to see the culprits behind the carnage arrested and punished.

A victim, Khiroda Barman, who lost her son, the sole bread earner in the family in the Ganeshguri blast, said that the mindless killings have brought untold miseries to the common people like her who struggle each day to earn their livelihood. The acts of

violence have given so much pain to the people. And the October 30 blast was the worst form of violence in the State and everyone must take the step so that October 30 is not repeated. And this can be done if the culprits of the blast are meted out exemplary punishment, she voiced out loud and clear.

Another victim Rupa Kalita who lost her husband Sunanda Kalita in the Ganeshguri blast said, From 5 am to 5 pm I have been struggling to feed my children. We had never seen any incident before like the Ganeshguri blast. Whoever is involved, must be given the death sentence, demanded Rupa adding that if perpetrators of the October 30 blast are shown any leniency, more people will die.

The friends and close associates of those killed in the blast were also present at the press conference. They regretted that a section has been trying to give a political angle to the issue of Ranjan Daimary. Whoever is involved in the October 30 blast must be meted out stringent punishment. This blast was the wake up call to the people of the capital city frequently targeted by the anti national elements and who had been passive sufferers. People here had never seen destruction on such a large scale before and the perpetrators should never be forgiven, they said.
