Vice President to visit Manipur today

IMPHAL, April 17 - Hectic preparations are on for the maiden visit of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu to Manipur tomorrow.

According to official sources available here, the Vice President will attend the valedictory function of a daylong State-level workshop on �Biodiversity and sustainable agriculture for doubling farmer�s income� at the City Convention Centre here on Wednesday afternoon.

Naidu is scheduled to address the gathering for about 30 minutes as per the programme schedule of the valedictory function which will be jointly organised by the Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, and the State Government.

Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla, Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh, Agriculture Minister V Hangkhalian, and Forest and Environment Minister Th Shyamkumar will also attended the function.

State Agriculture Minister V Hangkhalian is scheduled to inaugurate the workshop which will have two technical sessions prior to its valedictory function on Wednesday.

In the first technical session, Prof M Premjit,Vice Chancellor of the CAU, will present a paper on �Technological options for doubling farmers� income in the NE hill region of India.� Dr JM Laishram of the CAU will present a paper on �Crop biodiversity of Manipur�, Prof Dinabandhu Sahoo of the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development, Takyelpat, on �Opportunities and challenges in Manipur for livelihood improvement of farmers�, Dr H Birkumar of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, Imphal, on �Medicinal and aromatic plant bio-resources of Manipur for livelihood improvement of farmers�, and Dr Lokho Puni of the Forest Department will present a paper on the �Role of Manipur State Biodiversity Board for conservation and judicial use of genetic resources.�

In the second technical session, Prof W Vishwanath of Manipur University will deliver a lecture on �Economically important fish biodiversity of Manipur for conservation and sustainable use�.
