Veterinary College wins best team award

GUWAHATI, Oct 10 � Gauhati Commerce College organised the Dr Birinchi Kumar Baruah Memorial Inter-College Debating Competition 2010 recently at the BC Lahkar auditorium, a press release said.

The topic, �In the opinion of the house � The big river dam projects will be an impediment to socio-economic development of Assam�. Considering the relevance of the issue, the debate competition drew participants from 16 institutions, including the Gauhati University, the University Law College, JB Law College, Assam Engineering College, Handique Girls� College, B Baruah College, West Guwahati Commerce College, Tangla College, Paschim Guwahati Mahavidyalaya, NEF College of Management and Technology (Guwahati), NEF Law College, College of Veterinary Science, Pragjyotish College, Guwahati College, Cotton College and Gauhati Commerce College.

The competition was judged by Prof Santanu Phukan, Department of English, Cotton College, Dr Rani Mudiar Deka, Department of Economics, Dispur College, and Ankur Deka, Sub-Editor of �Gariyashi�. The Speaker on the occasion was Col (retd) Manoranjan Goswami.

The shield for the beat team was won by the College of Veterinary Science and the participants thereof being (1) Bandana Borgohain (For) and (2) Debpriyo Kumar Dey (Against) and the second runners-up shield was bagged by B Borooah College and the participants thereof being (1) Sumit Sarma (For) and (2) Hiranku Hazarika (Against).

The first prize, an amount of Rs 6001/- and a trophy was awarded to Kangkana Goswami of University Law College (GU), while Siddhartha Bhattacharjyya of Cotton College was given the second prize which comprised of a trophy and an amount of Rs 4001/-. Debpriyo Kumar Dey of the College of Veterinary Science bagged the third prize of Rs 3001/- and a trophy.

The welcome address was delivered by Dr Ghanashyam Nath, Principal of Gauhati Commerce College and the programme was attended by the Vice Principal, Prof PK Gohain along with the faculty and students of the college. The competition was preceded by a brief introduction on the life and works of Dr Birinchi Kumar Baruah by Dr Purno Bhattacharya. At the end of the competition the prizes were distributed among the winners by Col (retd) Manoranjan Goswami, who highly praised the standard of the debate, the choice of the topic and above all, the discipline maintained by the organizers.
