Veterans� soccer meet in city

GUWAHATI, Sept 18 � The city based United Brothers Club will host a football tourney for the seniors, above 40 years with the motto-Fit, Fair and Football.

The eight-team championship will be played at the Judges� Field here on September 20 and 21 in a league-cum-knock out format.

The club president Pranoy Bordoloi intimated in a press conference here today that, they are organising the tournament with an intension to attract veteran footballers and football lovers to take part in the tournament in order to keep themselves fit and encourage the youngsters to be associated with games and sports.

He mentioned that the champion team will be given Rs 50,000 and the other finalist will get Rs 30,000 as prize-money.

Noted journalist Homen Borgohain will inaugurate the championship at 3 pm on September 20. In the closing function Kamrup Metro DC M Angamuthu will be the chief guest. The coach of the ISL outfit North East United Football Club Ricki Herbert, who was also the manager of the New Zealand national team will also be present in the closing function.

The club secretary Dhiraj Dutta informed that eight teams- Assam Police, ASEB, RBI, Dakhin Bang FC (group A), Gauhati Town Club, Latasil Soccer Club, Khanapara FC, United Brothers (group B) have confirmed their participation. The organisers also have invited top former referees of the region like former FIFA badge holder Mrinal Kanti Roy of Silchar.

Balendra Mohan Chakravorty feted: The United Brothers Club felicitated Balendra Mohan Chakravorty, director of Abhiruchi Institute of Physical Education on the occasion of his 60th birth day. In another function noted journalists like Premadhar Sharma, Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Pulin Saha, Subodh Malla Baruah, artist Manabendra Baruah also honoured Chakravorty by explaining his contribution towards the development of sports literature through his Assamese sports monthly Abhiruchi.

The United Brothers Club also felicitated the players, coach and manager of the Betkuchi High School team which will represent Assam in the U-17 Subroto Cup to be held in New Delhi next month.
