Veteran Purno vs greenhorn Daryl duel in Tura

By Biplab Kr Dey

TURA, March 23 A day after the closing of filing of nominations, campaigning by the Congress and NPP have begun on a war footing. While the NPP team tried to cover as much area as possible with Agatha Sangma paying a visit to Ampati along with her father PA Sangma, Daryl and team Congress visited the East Garo Hills Hills region and visited Rongjeng and adjoining places.

The NPP began their campaign from Ampati, the bastion of CM Dr Mukul Sangma. Addressing the crowd at the weekly market, Agatha, MP from Tura, said, It is important for Garo Hills to re-elect Purno Sangma as an MP to resolve the ongoing situation.

Agatha questioned the current state of affairs in the region stating that the CM was unable to contain insurgency in Garo Hills and discuss peace. Agatha said, If CM cant approach New Delhi to intervene during UPAs tenure, how can he do so, when BJP and NDA forms the next government, which looks more certain with every passing day?

Garo Hills has just one seat in the parliament, so it is important that Purno represents us in New Delhi. He is one who can resolve our problems in the coming future, she observed.

Appealing for votes, Agatha stated that Sangma is likely to be given a senior position, if NDA forms the government which would mean that a solution to the insurgency problem was imminent and Garo Hills could be back on its feet.

Launching a tirade against Mukul, Purno said, India needs freedom from Congress and he (Mukul) has failed to bring about a holistic development of Meghalaya. The mood of the nation is very clear. The Congress is embroiled in corruption, which has led to price hike and utter chaos. The nation wants a change and Ampati has to give a verdict for change.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma is set to tour different parts of Garo Hills from tomorrow to drum up support for Daryl William Momin.

With the filing of nominations concluded, the scene is set for a straight fight between veteran Purno and greenhorn Daryl for Tura Lok Sabha seat, which goes to polls on April 9.
