Veteran Communist leader remembered

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 13 - Former colleagues of Communist leader late Vaskar Nandy remembered him at a meeting held at the auditorium of the Historical and Antiquarian Studies here on Saturday.

His former comrades recalled how deep his knowledge about the Indian society was. This led to his conclusion that struggle against caste repression is an inalienable part of the class struggle in India. Observing the recent socio-economic development of the peasants deserting their farming activities en masse, Nandy found at the fag end of his life that the peasants would not play the dominant role, as perceived earlier, in the Indian communist revolution, they said.

Nandy, who was leading the Provisional Central Committee of the CPI-ML as its general secretary, died of prolonged illness at a Jalpaiguri hospital on May 4 this year.
