NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Nov 29 - Veteran athlete Haladhar Duwarah, who represented India in the 1995 World Veteran Athletics Championship in Buffalo, New York, 1986 Asian Masters Athletics Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia was honoured with the Lakhimpur Award on the concluding day of the Lakhimpur Book Fair here on Monday.
He was felicitated with a citation, Chelleng Chadar and Sarai along with a cash award of Rs 25,000. The 88-year old Haladhar Duwarah was instrumental in the setting up of Lakhimpur Music College in 1972 and Lakhimpur District Red Cross Society. He was also a pioneer of adventure sports in Assam and led several trekking expeditions to Nepal and Tibet Himalayas during 1980s and 1990s. Duwarah was escorted up with a procession accompanied by Gayan-Bayan to the book fair venue by the organisers at Tyagkshetra. The award was presented to him by Uday Shankar Hazarika, president, Lakhimpur Chambers of Commerce.
Receiving the award, Duwarah said that nothing can deter a person if the action is carried out in an honest way. One can reach the goal with an honest mind and dedication, he said.
