Veteran Assam Agitation leader Gama Saikia dead

TEZPUR, Jan 19 - Noted social worker and a veteran leader of the Assam Agitation, Gama Saikia passed away on Thursday evening at the GNRC, Guwahati.

Late Saikia, an inhabitant of Benudhar Saikia Path here was admitted to a local private nursing home after suffering a heart attack and was then referred to the GNRC in a critical condition where he passed away at around 4.30 pm. He was 71.

It needs mention here that Late Gama Saikia, the third son of one of the noted educationists of the State, Late Benudhar Saikia after starting his education at Tezpur Silver Jubilee School completed his graduation from Darrang College.

Late Saikia who was a social worker in the true sense was involved in the Language Movement, Food Movement and the Assam Agitation. Till his demise, he was involved with many social platforms including Natarajam Kala Mandir, Chitralekha Namghar, Ghorpura Chuburi Namghar, Doulguri Shantidham and Ajanta Club. His death was deeply mourned.

He leaves behind his wife, a daughter and many relatives.
