GUWAHATI, Feb 16 � Kanaklata Hazarika (Saikia), who played the central role in the 1952 Assamese film Runumi, passed away at Jorhat last evening.

She was admitted in a local hospital following a sudden illness.

She showed immense courage in breaking the social barrier and coming forward to act in the film directed and produced by Late Suresh Goswami in 1952. She also showed keen interest in art and other cultural activities.

She was 76 and leaves behind her husband, three daughters and a host of relatives.
