Verbal row erupts between Morigaon MLA, AASU leaders

By Correspondent

MORIGAON, Oct 6 - Morigaon MLA Rama Kanta Dewri delivered an open speech on Sunday at Solmari in his partys organisational meeting challenging two All Assam Students Union (AASU) leaders, namely Utpal Sarma and Himangshu Mahanta to prove the character assassination charges levelled against him.

The MLA chided the two AASU leaders as sons of the Brahmin community, which was widely considered as a highly communal public statement by the socially conscious people attending the meeting.

It may be mentioned here that Rama Kanta Dewri earlier came down heavily on the AASU and the newly-formed Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Thursday in a largely-attended public meeting at Manipur, claiming that the AASU is presently nothing better than a Chanda Party which has done nothing for the welfare of the indigenous tribes of the State.

Protesting this statement, the Morigaon AASU leaders headed by Himangshu Mahanta and Utpal Sarma on October 2 arranged a press conference at Morigaon Gandhi Bhawan challenging Rama Kanta Dewri to prove his allegation as to who were the AASU leaders who demanded money from the Morigaon MLA during the CAA movement.

The AASU leaders also referred to an allegation against Dewri about an illegal act with a woman. Subsequently, the MLA too challenged the two AASU leaders that they had in fact demanded a huge sum of money from him during the CAA movement.

Though a verbal tug-of-war between the local AASU leaders and MLA Rama Kanta Dewri was going on, but the actual reason behind the unsavoury incident is still not known.

On the other hand, a section of peeved local people said that being the peoples representative, Dewri should show minimum restraint, at least while speaking in the public domain.

Dewri seeks apology: Meanwhile, Dewri has publicly sought an apology from the Brahmin community for delivering a derogatory speech directed towards it on Sunday, but stood by his allegations against the two Morigaon aasu leaders Utpal Sarma and Himangshu Mahanta.

Our Staff Reporter adds: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has condemned Dewris statement and called upon the police to register an FIR against the legislator. The Congress also demanded that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and the ruling BJP take action against Dewri.

Meanwhile, the Sadou Asam Devalaya Sangha in a statement has vehemently condemned the statement of the Morigaon MLA Rama Kanta Dewri.
