VDP secretary dies, 2 constables arrested

NAGAON, June 5 - Sensation prevailed in the greater Jajori area in Nagaon following the death of an on-duty VDP secretary and former local AASU leader late on Thursday evening after he was injured in a scuffle with two police constables at a COVID Care Centre on Wednesday night.

According to sources, two police constables � Atikur Rahman and Mohesh Sarma � allegedly in an intoxicated state assaulted VDP secretary Phanidhor Bora for reasons unknown on Wednesday night when Bora was on duty at the Jajori COVID Care Centre.

In the attack, Bora was seriously injured and was admitted immediately in a private nursing home at Nagaon. The doctors at the private hospital referred him to Guwahati on Thursday afternoon for further treatment as he was in a critical condition. But Bora succumbed to his injuries on the way to Guwahati late on Thursday evening.

Following the death of the VDP secretary, hundreds of locals of greater Jajori area on Thursday night went on a rampage and gheraoed the Jajori Police Station till midnight and staged a strong protest against the gruesome incident.

During the protest, the irate mob shouted slogans against Jajori police and demanded compensation as well as justice for the family of the victim without delay. The mob also demanded strict action against the two police personnel.

Meanwhile, senior police officials rushed to the police station and tried to bring the situation under control. Both the police constables were immediately arrested and a case was also registered, sources said.

Sources said both the police personnel brought Bora back to Jajori Police Station from the COVID Centre after the melee on that night and allegedly thrashed him even inside the police station for several hours.

Meanwhile, the officer in charge of Jajori police station was closed to Assam Police Headquarters with immediate effect on Friday morning by the DGP. Both the arrested police personnel were suspended, and remanded in custody for three days by Nagaon police.

Assam Police ADGP (Law and Order) GP Singh rushed to the spot and visited Jajori police station on Friday morning. He reviewed the incident in detail and also took feedback from the people of the locality.

He visited the house of the victim and handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh as compensation for the first phase to the wife of the victim. He assured that the police department would talk to government officials to appoint one of the family member of the deceased in government service.

Speaking to media persons at Jajori, ADGP Singh assured that the chargesheet of the case would be completed in 15 days and police would try to hold the trial in a fast-track court. He assured that police would take all measures to complete the entire trial in the current year.
