TEZPUR, June 19 - Following incessant rains during the last few days, several places in Sonitpur district have been inundated.

Tributaries of the river Brahmaputra, including Gabharu, Jarakhar, Jiabharali, Pachnoi, Dipota, Belsiri, Satrang etc., besides many other streams are overflowing.

In Belsiri area under Dhekiajuli Police Station, a person titled Goyari was drowned in the flash floods of the Belsiri river on Saturday night. His body was subsequently recovered by the SDRF on Sunday morning.

On the other hand, in Panchmile area due to the flash floods of the Jiabharali river, many villages, including paddy fields readied for seed beds are under water. Likewise, the Gabharu river has also submerged a large area in Barbil Megahijarani area under Thelamara PS.

Moreover, in Gohpur area, the Satrang river has submerged a huge area, including the Satrang village.

In Tezpur town, due to incessant rains, all the roads within the town were flooded, thereby leading to suspension of plying of all kinds of vehicles. However, people alleged that the flash floods caused due to the incessant rains during the last few days has compounded the dilapidated condition of the roads in Tezpur town, which have lately turned to a death trap due to prolonged non-repair by the agencies concerned.

The local tax-payers have also alleged that the local MLA Brindaban Goswami, who was elected with a huge mandate after the long stint by the Congress, is by and large considered as an inactive public representative for the constituency.

Though we expected development in this historic city, and despite one year of the new Government having elapsed, but no welfare work has been witnessed in the constituency, people alleged.
